§ 9. Walter de Merton.
In 1263 or 1264, Walter de Merton founded the House of the Scholars of Merton at Malden, in Surrey, linking it with a company of scholars resident in Oxford, and there supported on the produce of the Malden estate. A few years later, the warden was transferred from Malden to the direct charge of the Oxford group, and, in 1274, under revised statutes, the college of Merton started on its long and brilliant history as a permanently settled, chartered and endowed foundation. |
